Introduction

“I was standing on the beach. I couldn’t decide whether the horizon was enhanced or broken by the turbines. What would have been a clear view a few years ago, was now littered with our continued attempts to ‘innovate’ and develop ways to ensure our survival on this planet.”

Wind turbines are a good example of the difficulties we face when trying to make environmental improvements. Some see wind turbines as monstrosities that have all the appeal of electricity pylons in the open countryside. Others see ‘gentle giants’ that are part of a programme of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. And there are those that suggest that wind turbines are not that effective on a large scale and will only ever produce a minute amount of the power we consume.

This is the basis for Reduction Festival. Reduction Festival looks to artists and the creative industries to provide works that discuss and attempt to resolve some of these complex environmental concerns. 2008 is Reduction Festival’s 1st year and this year it will focus entirely on film. So if you’re a filmmaker, production company or artist working in video, please click here to read details of this year’s competition and events.

Reduction Festival is based in Sheffield, UK, which as a city has a diverse landscape of huge greenspace, industrial quarters and a growing creative industries sector. We hope that Reduction Festival will, over time, integrate into the local creative industries and environmental sector diaries. However, this event and the competitions associated to it are open to anyone further afield with an interest in environmental issues and/or film.

‘Reduction Festival’ is the environmentally-themed creative industries festival dedicated in its debut year to short film and video content. The festival runs from the 10th October to the 19th October 2008 and encompasses film competitions as well as screenings and events.

The festival is based in Sheffield, UK and features two competitions to get the mouths of wind turbine lovers, film lovers, climate sceptics and the casually intrigued watering.

The Online Jury Prize is an international competition open to everybody! Submissions for this competition are now open and the deadline has been extended to the 17th September 2008.

The 24/7 Filmmaking Challenge is a time-based filmmaking challenge for 24 filmmakers or production companies based anywhere in the UK. Registration for this event closes on the 3rd October 2008.

The festival will end with a gala screening at Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema where the three winning films from the Online Jury Prize will be screened alongside all the films from the 24/7 Filmmaking Challenge. Our special jury will then decide the winning film from each competition and some very happy filmmakers will emerge.

Check out the festival DIARY for all the key dates and deadlines relating to these competitions.
